SASS Brew Day
About 30 neophyte brewers came to Holy Trinity, Garland, TX to participate in the Saint Andrew Suds Society Brew Day. Participants enjoyed craft beer tasting and a beer exchange, brats with all the fixings, a presentation on the art of home brewing given by Fr. Garren Dickinson, Rector of Holy Nativity, and a live demonstration brewing a Nut Brown Ale.
A free home brew kit was awarded to the Brother Andrew who invited the most guests. Holy Trinity’s Jim Hall walked away with the covetted prize winning with 7 guests – and he promptly passed the kit along to one of his guests. Now a father and son-in-law have been added to the ranks of home brewers in the community.
“This is just another way to evangelize” said Fr Brown. “We find that this kind of event has had great appeal – especially among younger men. It is not about drinking – but about creating something unique that is all your own. During our Oktoberfest this fall – we will hold a home brew tasting contest to see who really does make the best beer. So in some sense, it is about bragging rights; because competition appeals to men, too. Men are attracted by the uniqueness of a “beer event” held in a church, but all we are really doing is exposing them to the ancient monastic tradtion of hospitality. Make no mistake about our intent. We may bring them in with beer – but that earns us the right to talk with our guests about other things – deeper things – spiritual things.”
